2018 Kathryn Kennedy Sauvignon Blanc

In addition to the very fine and incredibly age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons for which Kathryn Kennedy is known, they also make a great Sauvignon Blanc. This 2015 was sourced from only certified organic vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake Counties, thus giving it a straight California appellation. We were delighted to see that all that great organic fruit is playing well together, forming a nicely fruited but not overly fruity Sauvignon with great balancing acidity. It was gobbled up by our thirsty and discriminating wine bar guests when it was featured on the menu recently and we want to make sure we always have it on hand until it's all gone.

2016 Domaine Pichot Sparkling Vouvray

Comes primarily from vines located further behind the village from vineyards more suitable for sparkling wine. This cuvee is made as a méthode traditionnelle brut without addition of liqueur at disgorgement as there is already some sugar in the wine before ageing on lees. A very fresh and richly complex sparkling Vouvray aged on its lees up to 3 years until disgorgement with each order being prepared and freshly disgorged for us sur commande. Very lively bubbles with ripe intense Chenin flavours, very fresh and quite full bodied. Drinks very well as an aperitif and also throughout the meal with many richer courses being suitable.

NV Scharffenberger Brut Rose

Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Excellence is made by the méthode traditionelle process, whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. Most of the base wines underwent malolactic fermentation, which softens and rounds out the blend. The grapes are sourced from our vineyards in the Anderson Valley as well as other premium quality vineyards in Mendocino County with whom we have long term contracts. This type of vineyard selection allows us to choose from the best vineyards in the area, which enables us to produce our trademark cuvée. The fruit balance and color are achieved by adding between four and five percent of Pinot Noir wine to the blend before undergoing second fermentation in the bottle.

NV Roederer Estate Brut Rose

Roederer Estate’s winemaking style is based on two elements: ownership of its own vineyards and the addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s blend or cuvée. All the grapes for the Anderson Valley wines are grown on the estate. Oak-aged wines from the estate’s reserve cellars are added to the blend, creating a multi-vintage cuvée in the traditional Louis Roederer style.

Chardonnay

2018 Lageder Chardonnay

Originally known as Yellow Pinot Bianco, the variety became popular in Alto Adige in the 1980s. The grapes come from sites around Cortaccia, Magrè, Pochi, and Salorno that have the chalky gravel soils that are ideal for growing Chardonnay.

2017 Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

The 2017 growing season began with sustained rainfall throughout January and February, replenishing soil nutrients and resulting in healthy, vigorous vines. In total our vineyards saw 80″of rain, a welcomed sight after five years of prolonged drought. Steady weather led to budbreak in mid-March, a return to normalcy compared to prior years. A summer of gradual warmth indicated a textbook growing season until July, when we experienced a period of sustained warmth. August delivered much-needed cooler weather, allowing the clusters to develop complex flavors while maintaining their signature acidity. Unpredictable spells of extreme heat throughout September created challenges for many vineyards, however our dry-farmed vines were perfectly suited to thrive in the conditions. Cooling marine air arrived just in time to bring our vineyards to ideal harvesting conditions as our 2017 growing season came to an end.

2015 Domaine Eden Chardonnay

The 2015 harvest started off in mid-August (early) and was the last year of our five-year drought. As with our Estate Chardonnay, this wine is barrel-fermented in French oak and aged on the yeast lees for ten months in our Mount Eden cave. Two-thirds of the final blend came from our estate vineyards and one-third from the Chardonnay grown at Domaine Eden.

In early spring we review which lots of the Estate fruit are destined for our flagship Estate Chardonnay and which will go into the Domaine Eden. We taste through each barrel: those that have the most verve, reticence, length, and acid structure are candidates for the Mount Eden Estate; and the ones which are more forward in their fruit and are perceived to be earlier maturing, go into the Domaine.   It is a little humbling because, with bottle age, the Domaine wines compete well with the Estate Bottling.

Lovely perfume of lemon, hazelnut, and vanilla, this  Chardonnay gives way to a powerful palate with all-important minerality. The mountain terroir is especially evident in the lingering finish.  This small-yield vintage is a good candidate for the cellar so expect a peak in 2022 and beyond.

Interesting Whites

2018 Riff Pinot Grigio

The wines for the Riff Pinot Grigio are blended from selected vineyards in the foothills of the northeastern Italian Alps, which influence the climate and bless the region with prized alluvial limestone soils. The high limestone content is the geological result of coral reefs and fossils deposited at the bottom of an ancient sea that covered the region millions of years ago. The name Riff (German for "reef") refers to the Alps’ origin in that sea.

2018 Villa Wolf Dry Riesling

The growing season in the Pfalz started early and the summer was very hot and dry, which led to an early harvest. The yields were excellent compared to the small 2017 vintage, and we were very happy to have such healthy grapes and high quality. The 2018 harvest period was unproblematic and quite smooth. Because of the dry weather conditions and the healthy state of the grapes there was no need to rush, giving us time for careful selection and very gentle handling in the cellar.

2018 Miraval Rose

The 2018 vintage is a ray of Provencal sunshine, thanks to the region’s particularly generous climate and nature. The rains at the beginning of the season meant the vines were well-prepared and grew healthily in the spring. This is an exacting time during which we need to be constantly in the vineyard, keeping an eye on things, and the work is painstaking and meticulous. The warm and sunny summer we then enjoyed in Provence enabled the grapes to mature perfectly and harvesting conditions were ideal. This 2018 vintage is a rich one indeed, full of fruit and a fine freshness.

2018 Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel

2018 was a brilliant year for Zinfandel across California, and this wine reflects it.  The 2018 is a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards.  Many of our most venerable vineyards contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato filled in with lots from other old vineyards throughout the state.  This will provide great drinking pleasure with a decant early on, but as with most iterations of this bottling, will develop nicely for a number of years.

2016 Aaron Petite Sirah

The flagship wine that started it all. Each year we taste through every barrel one by one and select the wines to blend together into the Aaron Petite Sirah. Specifically, it's the barrels that, when tasted blind, simply jump out and wow us. However, it's never about one specific character or flavor profile, but rather those barrels that speak to us across all the different vineyards. Each site we work with produces a very different style of Petite Sirah, and the goal is to create what we feel is a 'complete' wine, which in reality is quite difficult. To check all the boxes, you need to have a lot of elements to create the depth and complexity to really give it that wow factor. In total, the blend is made up of 5 different vineyards in the Willow Creek, Adelaida, and Templeton Gap Districts, all of which bring a different element to the blend. Deep aromatics of cherry liqueur, cassis, licorice, and smoked meats complement a huge palate of dark fruits, pepper, spice, and floral notes.

With bullish tenacity and a fearless approach to new viticulture practices, Caymus has churned out blockbuster Californian Cabs for over 40 years. Its 2018 vintage is no exception. In typical Caymus style, this Cabernet is deep mulberry in colour with aromas of blackberry jam, cassis, currant and cocoa. Straight out of the gates it delivers a hefty punch of fruit to the palate followed by tantalizing notes of anise, cocoa, cherry vanilla, tobacco and a hint of pepper. While abundant in tannins it retains a softness that guarantees a silky mouthfeel and sultry finish.

2014 Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains

"A worthy successor to the profound 2013 and the fruit of the earliest harvest on record at this address, the 2014 Monte Bello is still quite youthfully expressive, wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins, which are currently largely concealed in a succulent core of fruit, and bright balancing acids. In profile, it's structurally more open-knit and giving than the massive 2013, and I suspect it will reach its plateau sooner, but it should enjoy over three decades of longevity. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.5% natural alcohol. 'The drought had a positive effect on concentration,' observed winemaker Eric Baugher when we corresponded shortly after harvest, adding that 'the wines are opaque in color, with rich tannins and marvellous fruit.' Four years later, that remains an accurate characterization of the 2014 Monte Bello." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Michel Rolland Cabernet Sauvignon

"Michel Rolland's enormous experience and obvious knowledge of great viticulture and winemaking has turned out a 300-case cuvee (14.7% natural alcohol) of exceptional wine. Notes of graphite, creme de cassis, blackberry, and a touch of coffee and white chocolate are present in this wine, which offers elegance, full body, beautiful purity, and sweet, well-integrated tannins. As the wine sits in the glass, some blueberry liqueur notes also develop. This plush, full-bodied wine should hit its prime in 4-5 years and last for 20 or more." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 Daou 'Soul of a Lion' Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

"Bottled just after I tasted it from barrel last year, the 2014 Soul of A Lion is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 22 months in new French oak barrels. Elegant, layered and decadent, with lots of blackcurrants, smoked earth, licorice, dark chocolate and espresso, it hits the palate with a killer, seamless texture, no hard edges and a great, great finish. It’s seriously good and up with some of the greatest Bordeaux blends from Paso Robles to date. " - Jeb Dunnuck

2014 Chapellet 'Prichard Hill' Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

"The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, is a stunner and one of the great, great 2014s. Inky purple with blueberry and blackberry fruit, cassis, licorice, graphite and white flowers, the wine is stunningly concentrated, full-bodied and seemingly one of the greatest of the 2014s. Still youthful, with at least 25-30 years of upside potential at the minimum, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050.” 99 Points: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase, and consume" - Robert Parker

2000 Ridge 'Monte Bello Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon

"The 2000 Monte Bello Proprietary Red (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) is a surprisingly forward example of a Ridge Monte Bello. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet toasty oak along with creme de cassis, licorice, and resin-like aromas. Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant with soft tannin as well as a forward style (surprising in view of winemaker Paul Draper’s typical style), I would not be surprised to see it firm up considerably in the bottle, and last for 12-13 years."  - Robert Parker

2014 Bond 'Quella' Bordeaux Blend

Quella is the name for the wine from a 9-acre site located in the eastern hills overlooking the heart of the Napa Valley. Making its debut with the 2006 vintage, the name is derived from the German word for a pristine source or an artesian aquifer. This property is steeply sloped facing southwest. The site is an ancient riverbed composed of cobble and rocks interwoven with pockets of tufa (volcanic ash) that were uplifted during the last volcanic activity in the area. Quella displays an almost ethereal quality of blue fruits, graphite, and a vibrant, subtle finish.

2014 Bond 'St. Eden' Bordeaux Blend

St. Eden is based upon an 11-acre rocky knoll that is part of a beautiful estate located just north of the Oakville Crossroad. Eden is an historical reference to this region’s designation on nineteenth century maps. The red rocky soil of this northfacing site originates from high in the Vaca Mountains. St. Eden, which appeared first in the 2001 vintage, reliably shows great focus, an opulent “sweet” center and notes of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, and roasted herbs. Mineral-tinged and broad on the palate, the wine consistently displays fine-grained tannins and a lush concentration.

Leading into the 2014 season, drought conditions worried growers throughout Napa Valley. Yet, bud break came early and beautiful weather prevailed. Our reservoirs had filled, but water management in the vineyard was crucial.  Timely irrigation was essential to produce perfectly ripe fruit.

2017 Devils Proof Malbec

Devil Proof Malbec, Rockpile Ridge, is a robust and powerful wine from the single vineyard site of Rockpile Ridge, in the Rockpile appellation in Northern Sonoma County, the smallest AVA in the United States. With little water retention in the gravelly loam soils to begin with, our practice of dry-farming this vineyard further enhances the naturally occurring stress in the vines. Here, our fruit ripens evenly and deeply. The wine is rich, diverse, and striking, and a true expression of its distinctive vineyard source.

2015 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. -Robert Parker

2016 Lokoya 'Howell Mountain' Cabernet Sauvignon

At the northeastern side of Napa Valley’s Vaca Range, the Howell Mountain appellation peaks at 2,500 feet. Our estate W.S. Keyes Vineyard was planted in 1888, and has been the exclusive source for the Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon since its first vintage in 1995. The vineyard sits at 1,825 feet, high above the fog line, where temperatures are cool but moderate, and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular thrives with extra time to ripen. The vines bask in a steady breeze and sunlight, surrounded by a forest of ponderosa pine. Lean, quick-draining soils force the vines to struggle, yielding small grapes that possess deep, concentrated flavor with a signature minerality and earthy undertone.

This full-bodied, rounded, thrillingly textured beauty boasts a saturated purple color as well as a huge nose of crème de cassis, new saddle leather, barbecue smoke, and scorched earth. It has perfect integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and oak, carries remarkable power and intensity, yet still glides over the palate with no heaviness or sensation of weight. It’s going to be a legendary Napa Valley Cabernet and will have 3 decades or more of longevity. -JD
