Henriot ‘Hemera’ Champagne, FR

The delicate bubbles form a steady stream of mousse with divine effervescence. The Champagne is brightly-tinged and golden yellow in appearance. The bouquet offers a wealth of elegant aromas, featuring notes of white flowers, linden leaf, and underpinned by a hint of vanilla. Candied fruit notes of apricot at the front of the palate pave the way for a hint of spice. The quintessence of the great terroirs. The magnificent freshness on the palate contrasts with the nose. Precise and mineral, a layer of iodine and saline accents are the characteristic of the most prestigious chalk parcels of the Côte des Blancs. This freshness complements the notes of ripe peach, nectarine and grapefruit. Notes of pastry and spiced fruit impart the lengthy finish. Uniquely irresistible. The low dosage of this cuvee plays its part in retaining and enhancing the natural beauty of the primary fruit.

Chardonnay

2019 Kistler 'Les Noisetiers' Chardonnay

This ‘Les Noisetiers’ Chardonnay is Kistler’s multi-vineyard Chardonnay bottling based on the three Sonoma Coast vineyards from which they bottle single vineyard examples; Vine Hill, Trenton Roadhouse and Dutton Ranch. ‘Noisetiers’ means ‘hazelnut’ in French and “refers to the lightly toasted hazelnut characters manifested year in and year out from these sites.” As with the vineyard-designates, this wine is barrel fermented and aged on the lees in 25% new three year air-dried French oak barrels for 11 months, after which time it is transferred to stainless steel tank for another three months of aging before bottling.

Orin Swift Mannequin Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape in California, and Mannequin was created to highlight the varietal from different appellations across the state in a single blend. Each vineyard and their resulting wine lots have their own personality which on their own makes them interesting; however, we’ve learned that sometimes the sum of parts can be greater than the parts themselves. You could say the same about the label too… Sourced from the Laguna Ranch and Del Rio vineyards in the Russian River Valley, the Stagecoach Vineyard on Atlas Peak and other select vineyards in Sonoma County, the 2020 Mannequin represents some of the best Chardonnay growing areas in California.

Beauregard Bald Mountain Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
The 2019 Bald Mountain Chardonnay is all about terroir. The own rooted 30 year old vines grow deep into the white sandy Zayante soils which is a highly decomposed ancient seabed lifted into the mountains by tectonic movement. The wine has a powerful saline minerality and fine acidity from the cooling ocean breeze. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak that accentuates the terroir of Bald Mountain Vineyard without overpowering it. The palate is medium-light in body with primary fruit flavors or Meyer lemon, yellow apple and crunchy asian pear. This wine will get better and better with time and I firmly believe this wine should be rested for at least 2-3 more years for it to really hit its stride. The wine is delicious now, but the best side of this wine will emerge with a bit of time (drink now - 2025). If consuming this wine in its youth, please decant for at least an hour and serve at or just below cellar temperature (50-55F) in a large Burgundy stem, please not too cold or the wine’s personality will be lost.

Kistler ‘Les Noisetiers’ Sonoma Cst

Les Noisetiers (pronounced Lay Nwaz-tee-yay) is a study of our Sonoma Coast sites. The name refers to the toasted hazelnut characters that we notice year in and year out from these sites. This cuvee is an appellation-focused Chardonnay. The explicit purpose of this wine is to illustrate a regional character of western Sonoma County highlighting mineral tones from vineyards with sandy Gold Ridge soils. The main sources are the Vine Hill Vineyard, Dutton Ranch and Trenton Roadhouse vineyards.

Tatomer, White Blend, Central Coast

“Hinter der Mauer” is an Austrian-German term that Graham Tatomer learned while working harvest in Austria at Emmerich Knoll which roughly translates to “your back against the wall”.  The room between the walls of the terraces of the vineyard and the vines he would work on was very tight and this feeling of having your back against the wall is something very familiar during the COVID-19 pandemic. This wine is an homage to his time in Austria working these vineyards and is expressed through these diverse sites throughout the Central Coast of California.

M. Preston, Rhone Blend, Dry Creek

2020 was a challenging harvest in Sonoma to say the least, but Preston winemaker Grayson Hartley made the most of it, crafting a unique white wine from the estate’s earlier ripening varietals that evaded any smoke taint.  This once-in-a-lifetime blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne and Assyrtiko (a classic Greek varietal) is lush with orchard fruit flavors, fragrant with a perfume of honeysuckle and peach, and vibrant and fresh with nuances of mineral, citrus peel, and zesty acidity.  Rich and flavorful like a grand white Rhone but with a vibrant kick!

Interesting Reds

2019 Shafer 'TD9' Bordeaux Blend

TD-9 is a proprietary blend that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, in the space of a few months, John Shafer went from riding morning commuter trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive a TD-9 tractor in our Napa Valley vineyard. He’d never grown grapes or made wine in his life. That spirit of risk-taking and adventure still guides Shafer today and inspired the creation of this new wine.

2008 Cain Five Bordeaux Blend 1.5 Liter

Due to the low yields and relatively late ripening, the Cain Five is fresh and firmly structured, with potential for long and consistent aging. This marks the second vintage of the return to 100% Cain Vineyard—Estate Bottled, which means 100% of the grapes were grown in Cain Vineyard. It is a worthy successor and perfect companion to the 2007. With its floral-herbal perfumed nose, and its juicy, mouth-wateringly vibrant palate, it could only be the Cain Vineyard.

2015 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. -Robert Parker

2018 O'Shaugnessy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a fabulous wine that overdelivers big time. Inky dark fruit, graphite, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice give the 2018 its distinctly savory, soil-driven personality. Time in the glass brings out attractive floral overtones. The tannins need time to soften, but there is a lot to look forward to. This is a very serious, polished wine. O'Shaughnessy's Napa Valley Cabernet remains one of the hidden jewels in Napa Valley.
