2018 Kathryn Kennedy Sauvignon Blanc

In addition to the very fine and incredibly age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons for which Kathryn Kennedy is known, they also make a great Sauvignon Blanc. This 2015 was sourced from only certified organic vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake Counties, thus giving it a straight California appellation. We were delighted to see that all that great organic fruit is playing well together, forming a nicely fruited but not overly fruity Sauvignon with great balancing acidity. It was gobbled up by our thirsty and discriminating wine bar guests when it was featured on the menu recently and we want to make sure we always have it on hand until it's all gone.

Long, cool fermentation in a mixture of old and new barrels gives our Chardonnay layers of fruitiness and complexity that result in a wine that is very enjoyable when young or after several years of bottle age. This method of fermentation, in conjunction with whole cluster pressing and "sur lie" aging add layers of toastiness and creaminess to the wine. Together these components meld together harmoniously to create a balanced wine that is both lively and rich in aroma and flavor.

Rosé

2019 Balletto Rose' of Pinot Noir

Rosé should be that wonderful, joyful wine that’s light, pretty and full of life. To coax the most complexity and balance from our pinot, we whole-cluster press 95 percent of the blend and bleed off 5 percent from our regular fermentation. The combination of the two methods gives the best of both styles. The whole-cluster portion makes the framework with acidity and minerality. The bleeds from the fermenters fill in the middle with bright fruit and texture. Together, they create the whole picture.

2019 Big Basin Rose

While this Rosé is in the same wheelhouse as the 2018 version (that was Carignane dominant), the 2019 expresses an interplay of Grenache and Carignane that adds to the intrigue and complexity of the wine. Like a proper whole cluster pressed rosé, the color is a pale pink/peach. The indigenous fermentation for this wine was very long and slow and only completed a couple of weeks prior to bottling. As a result, there is a trace of sediment (or cloudiness if it gets mixed up) as we did not filter out the tiny amount of spent yeast that was still not settled when we bottled. It has both wonderful texture and vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh and alive (refreshing!) The nose is floral with hints of peach and apricot. On the palate, the minerality comes through as crushed rocks with hints of stone fruit and just enough mouthwatering acidity to power a clean, but long finish. 420 cases produced.

Interesting Reds

2014 Big Basin 'Gabilan Mountain' GSM

The nose is a deep and rich melange of black and red fruits, kirch, cigar box and crushed rocks. On the palate, this is one of the most explosively fruit driven GSMs we have produced. It even brings to mind the powerful fruit that defined the Paderewski Vineyard GSM in pure calcareous shale hills of Paso Robles. And here too we have grapes grown in calcareous shale plus granite and limestone - all conducive to producing high acid and full on expressions of fruit. Just starting to become approachable now, we would expect this wine to continue developing deeper fruit notes and great texture with a few more years in bottle.'

2016 Comartin Cellars 'Cuvee Cassidy'

Cuvee’ Cassidy is a special barrel selection of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvédre dedicated to our youngest daughter, Cassidy. The wine was crafted from acclaimed vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara, including Tierra Alta vineyard in Ballard Canyon and Camp
GSM is an acronym for a wine consisting of the 3 grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvédre, which are common varieties historically linked to the Rhone area in southern France. Thus, it is commonly referred to as a “Rhone Style” blend.
Each variety is hand-harvested, fermented, and aged sur lie in barrels separately. After extended aging, the perfect blend of varieties and barrels are selected. The Grenache gives the wines aromatics (floral, berry driven nose), while the Syrah gives color, body and concentration. Lastly, a touch of Mourvédre gives structure and length.

2017 Big Basin Syrah

The one quality of Syrah we rarely find and we seek to capture in every Syrah label are floral aromatics. When you nose meets a glass with this wine in it, you will understand why capturing this quality of Syrah is one of our principal goals with this grape. Everyone we've poured this wine for immediately comments they have never smelled Syrah like this before. And the pleasure doesn't stop there. On the palate, this is a classic expression of the varietal: juicy plums, dark berries, iron and pepper. The grapes were fermented 46% whole cluster, which add really nice length to the finish. In short, this will be a hard wine to keeps your hands off from.

2014 Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains

"A worthy successor to the profound 2013 and the fruit of the earliest harvest on record at this address, the 2014 Monte Bello is still quite youthfully expressive, wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins, which are currently largely concealed in a succulent core of fruit, and bright balancing acids. In profile, it's structurally more open-knit and giving than the massive 2013, and I suspect it will reach its plateau sooner, but it should enjoy over three decades of longevity. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.5% natural alcohol. 'The drought had a positive effect on concentration,' observed winemaker Eric Baugher when we corresponded shortly after harvest, adding that 'the wines are opaque in color, with rich tannins and marvellous fruit.' Four years later, that remains an accurate characterization of the 2014 Monte Bello." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. -Robert Parker

At the northeastern side of Napa Valley’s Vaca Range, the Howell Mountain appellation peaks at 2,500 feet. Our estate W.S. Keyes Vineyard was planted in 1888, and has been the exclusive source for the Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon since its first vintage in 1995. The vineyard sits at 1,825 feet, high above the fog line, where temperatures are cool but moderate, and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular thrives with extra time to ripen. The vines bask in a steady breeze and sunlight, surrounded by a forest of ponderosa pine. Lean, quick-draining soils force the vines to struggle, yielding small grapes that possess deep, concentrated flavor with a signature minerality and earthy undertone.

Tierra Alta Vineyard, meaning “The High Land”, is perched on top of Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley.  (The famous wine-movie “Sideways” had the vineyard scenes filmed in Ballard Canyon.).
Ballard Canyon, because of its distinct microclimate, soils and high quality wines..

Positioned at the top of the canyon, the vineyard has great sun exposure and the elevation of 1,200ft allows for cool nights. The warm days and cool nights promote balanced ripening of the berries and clusters. The soils are primarily composed of clay and fragmented limestone, which give the wine soft tannins and added layers of minerality.
