Chardonnay

2017 Tolosa Chardonnay 375 ml

The No Oak Chardonnay reflects the minimal influence by winemaking to capitalize on the maximum expression of the fruit. This wine was fermented at very low temperatures to retain the volatile aromas of the esters generated during fermentation and underwent no malolactic conversion. This wine was aged on lees to accentuate the richness of the mid-palate which perfectly balances the natural acidity of the wine.

Rosé

2018 Zestos Rose

This tremendous dry rose is made from old vine Garnacha from one of the undersung growing areas of Spain, DO Vinos de Madrid. The subzone of San Martin Valdeiglesias produces among the most floral and mineral Garnachas in all of Spain. Zestos, which means basket in Spanish, pays homage to the rich viticultural history of Spain, referencing the back-slung baskets that vineyard workers used to transport the grapes from the vineyard to the wineries on foot. Madrid, long known for bulk wine production, has experienced a renaissance in the past 20 years, owing to the incredible raw material and unique terroir. The high elevation and old vine plantings in limestone soils produce Garnacha with lift, elegance, and nuanced aromatics. Zestos Rosado is the perfect warm-weather sipper – a versatile wine that performs equally well on its own or a variety of delicious food.

2016 Martella Grenache

Here is a red wine to enjoy even in the warm summer months ahead. These Grenache grapes come from two cool-climate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains that produce full-flavored fruit with delicacy and elegance, more like a true Rhône-style wine than a California powerhouse wine.

Michael's 2016 Grenache is a clear garnet in color with subdued aromas of cherry, vanilla and plum and floral notes of jasmine. It is a medium-bodied wine, silky in texture (a silkiness much enhanced by aeration). The small percentage of Syrah in this wine adds a layer of rich fruit flavor and spice notes. Ripe tannins and fine texture make the finish smooth and satisfying.

This Grenache makes an excellent summer sipping wine, which is not what you would expect from a red wine. Enjoyable on its own, it will also make a good dinner companion with grilled chicken and braised onions. Or try it with a roasted beet salad with pears, mild blue cheese and glazed walnuts.

2015 Promontory Proprietary Red

The Missing Shade of Red
In the early 1980s while hiking along Oakville’s southwestern ridge, H. William Harlan discovered an isolated territory. The hidden expanse — ancient and untamed — moved him deeply, but remained elusive until the Harlan family finally captured it in 2008. As the second generation explored and worked with the land, they began to make discoveries of their own. At the core of this wild terrain they found a powerful geologic convergence, which had shaped its steep, rugged topography, and created the conditions for an altogether exotic winegrowing environment. Over time they found that the dramatic landscape — just beyond the edge of the known — would slowly change them, and ultimately inspire a new endeavor: Promontory

Berrouet’s aim was always to create a true wine of place, allowing the fruit to express its bold brilliance, while using French techniques in the cellar to dial in on finesse and elegance. Supple and silky, bursting with black cherry, plum, and pomegranate, and etched with violet and chamomile, the Twomey Merlot is authentically Californian with the poise and refinement of an Old World classic.

2014 Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains

"A worthy successor to the profound 2013 and the fruit of the earliest harvest on record at this address, the 2014 Monte Bello is still quite youthfully expressive, wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins, which are currently largely concealed in a succulent core of fruit, and bright balancing acids. In profile, it's structurally more open-knit and giving than the massive 2013, and I suspect it will reach its plateau sooner, but it should enjoy over three decades of longevity. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.5% natural alcohol. 'The drought had a positive effect on concentration,' observed winemaker Eric Baugher when we corresponded shortly after harvest, adding that 'the wines are opaque in color, with rich tannins and marvellous fruit.' Four years later, that remains an accurate characterization of the 2014 Monte Bello." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur Richebourg Grand Cru Burgundy

Richebourg Grand Cru is a fine Burgundy wine produced by Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur, obtained from Pinot Noir grapes, the king of Burgundy. Different aspects such as the soils, the exposure, the sub-area particularly suited to this variety, the unique style of the producer, the right refinement in new wood: everything makes it possible to create a unique wine that stands at the top of the range. The Richebourg Grand Cru shows a bright ruby red color; the nose expresses a bouquet of spices, red fruit and black berries, rose petals and an earthy undergrowth background. The sip conquers for elegance: a velvety and soft sip integrates perfectly with the body of the wine, with a long mineral finish. As already mentioned, this bottle is certainly one of the best products of the Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur.

2014 The Mascot Cabernet Sauvignon

An otherwise even growing season in 2014 was made memorable by an earthquake that struck the Napa Valley in the early-morning hours of August 24th. Dry conditions that normally prevail at that time of year were unexpectedly altered; the geologic event had shifted the water table to the extent that many seasonal streams began to flow once again. This unusual circumstance brought unaccustomed moisture from the depths and, with it, renewed energy to many of the soils throughout the valley. In the wake of this phenomenon, we noticed subtle changes to the younger vines of BOND, Harlan Estate, and Promontory, which grew more vibrant as harvest approached. The resulting wine reflects this vibrance in its lift and flow across the palate, with its quality ringing true to the pedigree of its parent sites. Red fruit and baking spice intermingle on the nose, while on entry, the wine is soft, gently accelerating as it reveals athletic structure and shape, culminating in transparency and poise.

Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant with soft tannin as well as a forward style (surprising in view of winemaker Paul Draper’s typical style), I would not be surprised to see it firm up considerably in the bottle, and last for 12-13 years."  - Robert Parker

2015 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. -Robert Parker
