2018 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc

I blend to suit what I think is Astrolabe’s style, which reflects what I’ve learnt as a winemaker and drinker over the years. My style is dry, expressive and elegantly balanced. For me it is about getting a lovely sense of fully developed green spectrum flavours from all these different sites and putting them in a glass in a way that is well-styled and elegant. My Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc always presents with ripe green flavours like passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf and gooseberry. In the palate, it is full and round and finishes dry and lingering.

Rosé

2018 Zestos Rose

This tremendous dry rose is made from old vine Garnacha from one of the undersung growing areas of Spain, DO Vinos de Madrid. The subzone of San Martin Valdeiglesias produces among the most floral and mineral Garnachas in all of Spain. Zestos, which means basket in Spanish, pays homage to the rich viticultural history of Spain, referencing the back-slung baskets that vineyard workers used to transport the grapes from the vineyard to the wineries on foot. Madrid, long known for bulk wine production, has experienced a renaissance in the past 20 years, owing to the incredible raw material and unique terroir. The high elevation and old vine plantings in limestone soils produce Garnacha with lift, elegance, and nuanced aromatics. Zestos Rosado is the perfect warm-weather sipper – a versatile wine that performs equally well on its own or a variety of delicious food.

2016 Martella Grenache

Here is a red wine to enjoy even in the warm summer months ahead. These Grenache grapes come from two cool-climate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains that produce full-flavored fruit with delicacy and elegance, more like a true Rhône-style wine than a California powerhouse wine.

Michael's 2016 Grenache is a clear garnet in color with subdued aromas of cherry, vanilla and plum and floral notes of jasmine. It is a medium-bodied wine, silky in texture (a silkiness much enhanced by aeration). The small percentage of Syrah in this wine adds a layer of rich fruit flavor and spice notes. Ripe tannins and fine texture make the finish smooth and satisfying.

This Grenache makes an excellent summer sipping wine, which is not what you would expect from a red wine. Enjoyable on its own, it will also make a good dinner companion with grilled chicken and braised onions. Or try it with a roasted beet salad with pears, mild blue cheese and glazed walnuts.

2017 Fossil Point Pinot Noir

From the producer: "In the Edna Valley, on California’s Central Coast, our vines are never far from the influence of the sea. Sunny afternoons yield daily to brisk marine breezes, and the growing season is directly shaped by the seasonal flow of the currents and surface temperature of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Even our soils of calcareous shale and coarse sand were uplifted from the ancient ocean floor and weathered into place over the millennia. Fossil Point pays tribute to this bond between sea and vine. Located less than five miles due west of our winery, Fossil Point is a rugged headland with sweeping views of the coastline from Port San Luis to the Guadalupe Dunes. Standing on Fossil Point, you can enjoy the same ocean breezes that are on their way to our vineyards, where they will guide our vines to perfect ripeness."

In the momentous mouth, from a foundation of lush, dark fruit, there emerges juicy red plum, raspberry, black pepper, and touches of lavender and anise. The tannins are ripe and silky, ready for right-now drinking, while offering the promise of beautiful things to come with cellaring. The finish stays with you both in the mouth and in the memory for a long, long time.”

2014 Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains

"A worthy successor to the profound 2013 and the fruit of the earliest harvest on record at this address, the 2014 Monte Bello is still quite youthfully expressive, wafting from the glass with an exuberant bouquet of minty dark berries, plums, black cherries, cigar box and a nicely integrated framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and intense, with a rich chassis of structuring tannins, which are currently largely concealed in a succulent core of fruit, and bright balancing acids. In profile, it's structurally more open-knit and giving than the massive 2013, and I suspect it will reach its plateau sooner, but it should enjoy over three decades of longevity. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it attained 13.5% natural alcohol. 'The drought had a positive effect on concentration,' observed winemaker Eric Baugher when we corresponded shortly after harvest, adding that 'the wines are opaque in color, with rich tannins and marvellous fruit.' Four years later, that remains an accurate characterization of the 2014 Monte Bello." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Michel Rolland Cabernet Sauvignon

"Michel Rolland's enormous experience and obvious knowledge of great viticulture and winemaking has turned out a 300-case cuvee (14.7% natural alcohol) of exceptional wine. Notes of graphite, creme de cassis, blackberry, and a touch of coffee and white chocolate are present in this wine, which offers elegance, full body, beautiful purity, and sweet, well-integrated tannins. As the wine sits in the glass, some blueberry liqueur notes also develop. This plush, full-bodied wine should hit its prime in 4-5 years and last for 20 or more." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2015 Daou 'Soul of a Lion' Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

"Bottled just after I tasted it from barrel last year, the 2014 Soul of A Lion is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 22 months in new French oak barrels. Elegant, layered and decadent, with lots of blackcurrants, smoked earth, licorice, dark chocolate and espresso, it hits the palate with a killer, seamless texture, no hard edges and a great, great finish. It’s seriously good and up with some of the greatest Bordeaux blends from Paso Robles to date. " - Jeb Dunnuck

2014 Chapellet 'Prichard Hill' Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

"The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill, 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, is a stunner and one of the great, great 2014s. Inky purple with blueberry and blackberry fruit, cassis, licorice, graphite and white flowers, the wine is stunningly concentrated, full-bodied and seemingly one of the greatest of the 2014s. Still youthful, with at least 25-30 years of upside potential at the minimum, this is a wine for patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2050.” 99 Points: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase, and consume" - Robert Parker

2000 Ridge 'Monte Bello Vineyard' Cabernet Sauvignon

"The 2000 Monte Bello Proprietary Red (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) is a surprisingly forward example of a Ridge Monte Bello. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet toasty oak along with creme de cassis, licorice, and resin-like aromas. Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant with soft tannin as well as a forward style (surprising in view of winemaker Paul Draper’s typical style), I would not be surprised to see it firm up considerably in the bottle, and last for 12-13 years."  - Robert Parker

2015 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. -Robert Parker

2016 Lokoya 'Howell Mountain' Cabernet Sauvignon

At the northeastern side of Napa Valley’s Vaca Range, the Howell Mountain appellation peaks at 2,500 feet. Our estate W.S. Keyes Vineyard was planted in 1888, and has been the exclusive source for the Lokoya Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon since its first vintage in 1995. The vineyard sits at 1,825 feet, high above the fog line, where temperatures are cool but moderate, and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular thrives with extra time to ripen. The vines bask in a steady breeze and sunlight, surrounded by a forest of ponderosa pine. Lean, quick-draining soils force the vines to struggle, yielding small grapes that possess deep, concentrated flavor with a signature minerality and earthy undertone.

2016 Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon

Just about as close to perfection as a wine can get, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from winemaker Chris Carpenter comes mostly from mountain vineyards and is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot. This full-bodied, rounded, thrillingly textured beauty boasts a saturated purple color as well as a huge nose of crème de cassis, new saddle leather, barbecue smoke, and scorched earth. It has perfect integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and oak, carries remarkable power and intensity, yet still glides over the palate with no heaviness or sensation of weight. It’s going to be a legendary Napa Valley Cabernet and will have 3 decades or more of longevity. -JD
